what is it?

A decal is a course that you can take that is run by students from UC Berkeley. Check us out on their website. If you sign up for our decal, you'll get 1 Asian American Studies field unit, which adds up to 45 hours of field work, or basically, 45 hours of some really fun hardboiled goodness. You don't need to be in the decal to be on staff, but why not get units for the work your doing?

basic info

Course Title: Asian American Studies 97/197
Location and Time: 204 Wheeler, Wednesdays at 6pm - 7:30pm
Contact: Alice Tse and Annie Kim Noguchi

Objective: To provide students with an introduction to Asian American print journalism through the actual hands-on experience of participating in the production and distribution of Berkeley's largest Asian American newsmagazine, hardboiled. It is a work-intensive job that requires weekly effort and dedication on the part of the staff and core aside from their usual coursework. Each issue of hardboiled (three per semester, 12-16 pages each) usually requires a month to complete. We will cover the basics of what goes into the publications and discuss issues in the Asian American community.

Deadline to add this class is the end of the 3rd week of instruction! So email Kat or Kory for Course Information and the CCN!

course requirements

Contributions: Depending on the role they choose, students will contribute to the production of each issue.

- Writers must submit two polished articles for production (one story per issue).
- Layout students must put together a total of six pages during the semester (divide over two issues or more).
- If you would like to submit artwork, photography or do tech work, please contact the decal coordinator(s) to discuss the contribution requirements.

Mandatory Staff Retreat: Nov. 20, Saturday, 9 am – 4 pm. Staffers may choose to attend workshops on News Writing 101, Layout 101 and Interviewing and Investigative Journalism.

Time requirements: For this field studies course, students must keep a dated record of the number of hours spent working with hb. The total number of hours must be 45 hours or greater (45 hours may sound like a lot, but you'll probably end up doing more than 45 hours and you won't even realize it!). This time sheet is due on the last day of the course.

The hours can be divided as follows...
- Weekly Staff/Decal Meetings: 1 hour a week; you may not miss more than 3 meetings.
- Contribution of Story Ideas: at least two story ideas for each issue of hardboiled (that ends up being six story ideas total)
- Distribution and Tabling: must log a total of at least 9 hours of distribution/tabling total (average of 3 hours per issue)
- Production: must attend two out of three production meetings to assist in the final preparations for each issue (typically held on Thursday evenings and can run from 3-5 hours)
- Staff Contribution: the remaining hours are spent on staff assignments such as gathering story ideas, researching, writing and editing articles, assisting with layout, completing artwork, attending community events and critiquing finished issues.

Final Paper: Also required is a 3 page analytical paper, size 12 font, Times New Roman, due at the end of the semester. This paper will outline your activities during the semester, analyze what you learned about journalism and Asian American issues, and discuss the role of a newspaper such as hb. This paper is due on the last day of the course. NO LATE PAPERS!
