…all the Chinese miners…

author: ttsang category: around the world tags: , date: March 1st, 2009

In all seriousness, being a Chinese miner has not significantly improved over the last 150 years. They were exploited and discriminated during the California Gold Rush and now they are working in extremely dangerous conditions. Earlier this month, at least 74 Chinese coal miners were killed in a blast in Shanxi province and just this weekend, four other miners were trapped in flooded coal mine. I do believe in the eerie effects of the whole 6 degrees of separation and do not doubt that many individuals in the Asian American community have also been affected by these recent events. It’s something to reflect on and to consider the role of the ethnic activism in the global community.

Gary Locke Nominated for Commerce Secretary

author: elainechen category: politicking tags: date: February 26th, 2009

If people didn’t know already, Obama elected his third Asian American to his cabinet. Commerce Secretary-designate Gary Locke can be best known amongst our population as the first Asian American elected governor of a state (Washington). However, my celebratory mood was short-lived as soon as I read this article:

“Locke’s China work complicates bid.”

What the freak, so it’s an “ethics issue” if Locke is elected as Secretary because of his ties to China?? It seems like the wounds of the 1996 Clinton finance scandal have not healed completely. This pisses me off:

“Yet if he’s confirmed as commerce secretary, Chinese trade issues – including some with direct impact on the companies he went to bat for – are likely to be high on the agenda for Locke, who is the first Chinese-American governor.”

I can understand why there’s this heightened sensitivity to potential corruption for Secretary nominations due to the huge blundering of the former cabinet appointees and their ridiculous tax mishaps, but I’m fed up with the idea that Asian Americans can’t be trusted into political positions merely because we’re perceived as foreigners.

Would such suspicion of loyalty to America occur if the person nominated were not Asian American? That’s messed up.

Okay, who else watches LOST?

author: elainechen category: entertainment and stuff tags: date: February 22nd, 2009

Admit it. There must still be LOST fans out there, I can’t possibly be the only one who is still keeping up with this show. It’s not because it’s especially extraordinary or anything, but purely because I want to know what the freak is going on with this creepy Island. But more importantly, who else is psyched that JIN IS ALIVE?

NOT DEAD!

NOT DEAD!

As painful as it is to listen to him yell in Korean and speak with a fake Asian accent to fulfill the stereotype of an angry hypermasculine Korean man, perhaps 80% of the reason why I keep watching this show is because of him and Sun.

I’m psyched to see how his revival will play out, especially now that Sun’s coming back. Alright, hidden LOST fans. Come out of the shadows and tell me that I’m not alone.

WTF GOOGLE: Part deux

author: ctran1023 category: calling 'em out, effing racism, entertainment and stuff tags: date: February 22nd, 2009

I am absolutely not going to refute the claim that Google is pretty much the reason why the universe functions these days BUT I do have to say that they could do a tad more to amp up their political correctness. It’s a total coincidence that Annie’s last blog is about Google because just last night I was watching the latest Wong Fu snippet (It’s hilarious and you should check it out!) when low and behold a couple Google ads popped up at the bottom of the youtube screen. Mind you this is no exaggeration:

Ad 1: “Want to date some sexy ASIAN LADIES? Go online to visit our dating website.”
(i am not going to list said website b/c some creeper will probably go visit it for said reason).
Ad 2:”Hot Chinese Girls” + link to stupid website #2.
(Once again, no free advertisement for you, racist “Hot Chinese Girls” website!)
Ad 3: “Enroll in Martial Arts Classes NOW!”
Yes, because Wong Fu = Asians = Bruce Lee = Martial Arts … duh.

Really, Google, really? Someone needs to fix that shizz asap.

Maybe people are extremely lonely because they are terrified of Chinese people?

Languages MATTER.

author: ctran1023 category: Uncategorized, berkeley madness tags: date: February 16th, 2009

Ahh yes, the impending doom that is budget cuts. Clearly, it’s going to be a lot worse than most people anticipated seeing how crappy the economy is. However, instead of just being a Debbie Downer and leaving it at that, hb really wants you all to do something about it.

The API Education and Languages NOW! (APIEL!) org is putting on open forum to talk about how to strengthen language education at Berkeley, recession or not. I know that it’s not necessarily easy for the administration because they do have the tough job of finding ways to make ends meet but we need to let them know that what we really can’t afford is losing language education. Come to the event to voice your opinions and learn something!

They’re going to have amazing speakers like Prof. Ling-Chi Wang (activist since the Third World Liberation Front), Prof. Elaine Kim, Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, and Vice Chancellor of Equity and Inclusion Gibor Basri.

When: Thursday, February 19th, 2009 from 4:00-7:00 pm
Where: Heller Lounge, MLK Jr. Student Union

Update on Miley Cyrus Debacle

author: ekwon category: Jelly is a hipster, Uncategorized, is this news?, music industry tags: date: February 14th, 2009

Here’s the update on the Miley Cyrus debacle.

1. Miley Cyrus takes non-racist picture with Asian people.

2. Miley Cyrus gets slammed with a $4 billion lawsuit.

3. Margaret Cho dedicates a song to Miley Cyrus (Hey, they have the same intials! … similarities end there.)

My little sister, Jelly, used to love Hannah Montana. She had all the chapter books (you know, the ones where publishers basically recap the episode, print it out in 38 font, stick a glittery cover on it and sell it for 8 bucks at school book fairs). She blasted “If We Were a Movie” through the headphones of her Mickey Mouse Mp3 player, while dancing around the living room with an imaginary microphone tightly held in her chubby fist.

Now she’s in sixth grade. She refuses to wear pink, replaced Mickey Mouse with an ipod, plays Coldplay on her electric bass, and recently informed me that she no longer “plays” with her friends… she “hangs” or “chills” with them.

Here’s my question.

If my little Jelly has managed to mature into a too-cool-for-school hipster in the blink of an eye, how long will it take for Miley Cyrus to grow up?

Cyrus is 16. Which is old enough to know making “chinky eyes” is not just making a “silly face” (which is what she claimed she was doing). She’s also experienced enough to know that her life is not private, and that many little girls look up to her.

With all of that said, $4 billion seems extreme. While I doubt my parents will be recieving $4000 in the mail anytime soon, the suit definitely makes a statement. The Asian community isn’t going to be pushed around.

Yay.
